What else can be used other than staining to increase contrast of the specimen?

I'm doing a lab write up for my lab biology honors cl. We are looking at different cell structures under a microscope and one the questions she is asking is other than using stains to be able to see parts of the cell. Whats another thing you can do to higher contrast so you can see the cell better under the microscope?
